Channel Hardening in Massive MIMO - A Measurement Based Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wireless-controlled robots, cars and other critical applications are in need of technologies that offer high reliability and low latency. Massive MIMO, Multiple-Input MultipleOutput, is a key technology for the upcoming 5G systems and is one part of the solution to increase the reliability. More specifically, when increasing the number of base station antennas in a massive MIMO systems the channel variations decrease and the so-called channel hardening effect appears, which makes the channel seem more deterministic. In this paper, channel hardening in massive MIMO systems is assessed based on an analysis of measurement data. For an indoor scenario, the channels are measured with a 128-port cylindrical array for nine single-antenna users. The analysis shows that in a real scenario a channel hardening of 3.2–4.6 dB, measured as a reduction of the standard deviation of the channel gain, can be expected depending on the amount of user interaction. Also, some practical implications and insights are presented.

Semi-Blind Channel Estimation based on subspace modeling for Multi-user Massive MIMO system
Channel estimation is an essential task to fully exploit the advantages of the massive MIMO systems. In this paper, we propose a semi-blind downlink channel estimation method for massive MIMO system. We suggest a new modeling for the channel matrix subspace. Based on the low-rankness property, we have prposed an algorithm to estimate the channel matrix subspace. In the next step, using o...
متن کاملChannel Hardening and Favorable Propagation in Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Stochastic Geometry
Cell-Free (CF) Massive MIMO is an alternative topology for Massive MIMO networks, where a large number of single-antenna access points (APs) are distributed over the coverage area. There are no cells but all users are jointly served by the APs using network MIMO methods. In prior work, it has been claimed that CF Massive MIMO inherits the basic properties of cellular Massive MIMO, namely channe...
متن کاملOn the Ergodic Rate Lower Bounds with Applications to Massive MIMO
A well-known lower bound widely used in the massive MIMO literature hinges on channel hardening, i.e., the phenomenon for which, thanks to the large number of antennas, the effective channel coefficients resulting from beamforming tend to deterministic quantities. If the channel hardening effect does not hold sufficiently well, this bound may be quite far from the actual achievable rate. In rec...
متن کاملMassive MIMO Channel Modeling – Extension of the COST 2100 Model
As massive MIMO is currently considered a leading 5G technology candidate, channel models that capture important massive MIMO channel characteristics are urgently needed. In this paper we present an attempt for massive MIMO channel modeling based on measurement campaigns at 2.6 GHz in both outdoor and indoor environments, using physically-large arrays and with closelyspaced users. The COST 2100...
متن کاملUtility-based Downlink Pilot Assignment in Cell-Free Massive MIMO
We propose a strategy for orthogonal downlink pilot assignment in cell-free massive MIMO (multiple-input multipleoutput) that exploits knowledge of the channel state information, the channel hardening degree at each user, and the mobility conditions for the users. These elements, properly combined together, are used to define a user pilot utility metric, which measures the user’s real need of a...
